陶芸界には今までなかった面象嵌の技法を考案、研究し成功させた日本を代表する陶芸家。世界的にも有名な今井は、その功績により平成23年文化功労者に選任され、平成30年には、京都の陶芸家としては、富本憲吉、楠部彌弌に次ぐ3人目の文化勲章受章の栄誉に輝く。現在も日本藝術院会員として後進の指導にあたっている。
Masayuki Imai is an internationally famous ceramicist who represents Japan, and is known throughout the pottery world for research and conception of his successful surface inlay technique. He was appointed as a Person of Cultural Merit in 2011 for his achievements, and in 2018 he was the third person of cultural merit in Kyoto after Kenkichi Tomimoto and Yaichi Kusube. He is still instructing younger generations as a member of the Japan Art Academy.
